Before you hire a military researcher or visit the archives, learn the 2-part research strategy. It will save you time, money, and you will tell a more accurate story.
Most of these military research classes are not long, drawn-out webinars. They are broken into modules with shorter lessons to make it easier for you to go back to a section you need to rewatch. Each comes with a variety of extensive guides, military records, and workbooks as applicable for each class. Certificates of Completion are also available in each program.
Explore classes by Branch-Specific Pathway (listed first below) or Individual Classes. If you choose individual classes you are strongly encouraged to take at least one Branch-Specific class to learn the 2-part research strategy I developed 16 years go so you have a solid foundation.

A pre-recorded class to help you research your World War I Army veteran. You’ll learn my 2-part research strategy and then we'll explore where you can find records. You’ll learn how to use the FamilySearch VA Index and the Enlisted and Muster Rolls. Where POW Records Actually Live
We’ll explore key record sets at the NARA, and examine websites with POW records and puzzle pieces. We will look at the European Theater (German Camps) and the Pacific Theater (Japanese Camps).
Records for those who died as POWs. You will learn about the Individual Deceased Personnel File (IDPF) for POWs who died in captivity. Explore what’s inside, how to request it, and how to interpret it.
